Caught in the Eye
Caught in the Eye is an attempt to know more about the symbiotic relationship between observer and observed, with regard to the surveillance of the now defunkt East German secret police; the STASI. In East Germany power was often distilled into these two units of society. The project was influenced by the writings of Michel Foucault on discipline and power structures and Jean-Paul Sartre on the gaze as well as utilising cinematic and other cultural references. Research was also undertaken at the Stasi archive in Berlin. It considers not just state surveillance, but the personal and social uses and impact of surveillance.
