Fell em Doon

The forces of capitalist production have continuously transformed the terrain to the north of Ashington, Northumberland. This was once one of the largest colliery sites in Europe. Large areas of woodland were felled to make way for the rapid industrialisation and population growth that saw what was once known as Fellham Downs develop into Ashington: "the world's largest coal mining village". Following the collapse of the coal mining industry, the huge industrial structures and slag heaps became idle. The landscape was again altered as an ostensible and peculiar arcadia. There's a brutality to the production; the many trees cut, pits sunk, and the hundreds of people that passed away both above and below the surface. Walking through the woodland, one notices a curious echo of violence within the silence and the picturesque. I wonder if one day this echo will resonate in the earth.
