Informative and well-designed site for this excellent photographic publisher. Manchester University Press
http://www.manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/
The main reason to visit this site is to check on The Critical Image series edited by John Taylor. At present there are eight titles, including 'The Art of Interruption: Realism, Photography and the Everyday'. Each book is given a description of its content and can be ordered online. |
 |
Phaidon
http://www.phaidon.co.uk/
Phaidon specialises in good quality art books at affordable prices. It is responsible for the excellent 55 paperback series: a compact introduction, with text and images, to photography's greatest current and past practitioners (£4.95). The website includes a 'book gallery' with information about recent titles. Each book is given its 'spec', information about the author, the book content, and a few sample pages. Purchases can be made online. |

Reaktion Books
http://www.reaktionbooks.co.uk/
Reaktion specialises in books concerning visual culture and history written by academics for a not exclusively academic audience. The site is neat and clear with informative descriptions about each title. Anyone interested in a broad range of cultural issues will find much to interest them. |

Scalo
http://www.scalo.com/
Very good Swiss-based publisher of quality art photographic books. Keep up-to-date with international art photography by ordering their catalogue online. The site is exemplary in its usability. The catalogue is listed by author and title; click on whatever interests you and up comes an image of the book cover and a comprehensive book description. |
 |
Schirmer Mosel
http://www.schirmer-mosel.de/
Publisher of 269 fine art and photography books. Although a number of key German photographers fall within the schirmer-mosel stable, the catalogue is a mixture of art photography and more popular titles. The site is cumbersome, with titles falling within a number of viewing categories. All books can be bought online. |
 |
Taschen
http://www.taschen.com/
Using easyjet orange for its website livery, Taschen's aim is to democratize 'world photography'. The titles tend to focus on the more obvious and popular figures in the photographic canon (for example Blossfeldt), as well as a substantial list of erotic work. The site is easy to use, with a full list of publications, and features on best-sellers and forthcoming publications. For selected books it is possible to flick through six sample pages. |
 |
Thames and Hudson
http://www.thamesandhudson.com/
Thames and Hudson flags itself as 'one of the most respected and innovative publishers of illustrative books in the world'. This may be true, but their photographic titles are not the most inspiring; neither is the website. Their complete catalogue is available online (of which 103 are photo books). For each title there is an image of its cover and a brief book spec - the number of pages, number of illustrations, and book size. No description of the artist or the type of work is provided making impulsive purchases a little risky. |

Twin Palms
http://www.twinpalms.com/
Twin Palms Publishers produce quality contemporary and historical photographic monographs. Their titles are often slightly contentious; they were the first to publish Joel-Peter Witkin and a recent publication 'Without Sanctuary', is a history of lynching photography in America. Their site previews forthcoming publications and lists the back catalogue. All can be ordered online. There is a 10% discount for web orders, monthly special offers, and the opportunity to buy 'hurt' copies at a 50% discount (availability of hurt books requires a telephone call). A news and events section, book reviews and a useful list of web links provide a broader context in which to consider twin palm publications. |
