Mainstream US Media

ABC
http://www.abcnews.com/
ABC is the network for some of the US's most popular news programmes and morning television shows, which are available on this site along with news stories from health to the market indices. This site has many interactive options: video, audio, chat room, bulletin board. Quick and easy to use with the emphasis firmly on national and local American news; international stories coming third.

CNN
http://www.cnn.com
With the option of Europe, America or Asia sites, CNN is comprehensive in coverage with a slick, visually busy format. Easy to use with the usual links and interactive options plus a link to story-related resources, ie: weather news will suggest a link to the National Meteorological site.

The NY Times
http://nyt.com
The NY Times is known for it's liberal, (and openly Zionist) bias and, like the paper itself, the web version is tantalizingly full of information: international news, science, health, etc. Unfortunately you have to join (for free) to get it all. There are the usual links, plus classified ads and online services. One bonus is the absence of endless half and full page ads that bulk up the paper and break up the stories.

The LA Times
http://www.latimes.com/
Very similar to other general interest newspaper sites (ie: the NY Times, the Washington Post) with the added interest of some Hollywood-type gossip. The op-ed pieces all have an American liberal bias.

The Washington Post
http://www.washingtonpost.com/
This venerable newspaper's site is easy to navigate and has a 'print' version which provides an opening paragraph if you want a taste of the article before committing. As might be expected, there is an emphasis on US politics in particular and DC goings-on specifically. Great for that insider feel.

CBC News
http://www.radio.cbc.ca/news/
Both a radio (non-commercial) and a television network serving Canada's territories. With chat rooms and bulletin boards, CBC feels like a combination of ITN and the BBC's site. It has listings for all the on-air programmes, sections for French speakers and live audio and video links.

VOA
http://www.voa.gov/newsnow/
The Voice of America radio site is Washington based, but promises 'accurate, objective and comprehensive' reporting. Set up during WWII to serve Americans (and other English speakers) abroad, the tone is earnest and helpful. They have a version of the news using a limited vocabulary for those improving their English.
