Alis Volat Propriis
'Alis Volat Propriis' is an exploration into an anatomical impairment and the effects this has on one's perception of beauty. Borrowing traditional themes often found surrounding the female nude in classical painting and sculpture, I hope to portray a sense of femininity and fragility, rendering the human body as beautiful yet vulnerable. Presented on fragile textures, these small photographic studies represent my own attitudes to the body in relation to debilitation and illness. These intimate portraits juxtapose with technical medical drawings depicting the Lymphatic System, a vital network of organs, nodes, and vessels which have a crucial effect on our immunity. If this system becomes damaged or blocked many parts of the body can be affected and a condition known as Lymphoedema occurs. Throughout this series I aim to present two sides of this illness: psychological flight and anatomical constraint.
