Fukushima Samurai
Soma Nomaoi is an annual celebration of Samurai warrior culture in Fukushima and more than 1000 years old. In 2011 approximately 2,000 people died in Fukushima due to the tsunami and earthquakes, 80% of whom were from the area where the Soma Nomaoi is held. The Samurai portrayed here were once residents in the area close to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. They are no longer allowed to live there but they can now enter the area during the day. I took each of their portraits in places that had a personal meaning to them, reviving their memories of home. The images form part of my long-term project 'Fukushima Samurai' which explores Japanese identity.
