Causality
I describe my practice as ‘orthogonal to the canonical definition of climate photography’. I’m interested in the underlying human causes of climate change rather than the evidence proving it is real which, at this point, is well established. This inevitably connects to ideas of people, place and culture. In the West, we are conditioned to consume by capitalist ideals - with devastating consequences to our environment. I seek to draw attention to this through the transformations we enact on the land. In Causality, I explore our individual responsibility for climate change asking; should we be demanding action or acting ourselves? As Bertrand Russel said in 1946, “the difficulty is to persuade the human race to acquiesce in its own survival”.
