We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live
During my earliest years, my parents lived and worked overseas. We moved from Bahrain, where I was born, to eight other countries before I was ten. Relocations took place within a year or less. Establishing and dismantling temporary homes became habitual, with souvenirs acquired along the way. My project, 'We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live', examines heirlooms and their cultural associations, revealing insights into my peripatetic childhood. After my mother's dementia and transition into care, I had to sell her home. Packing up my parents' lives and deciding what to keep was challenging. Using staged portraiture, gel printing, and archival photographs set against a backdrop of packaging materials, I explore the containment and capacity of memory.
