The conduct might seem innocent. The victim might not be aware.
‘Controlling or Coercive Behaviour in an Intimate or Family Relationship’ is a criminal offence under the Serious Crime Act 2015. In the year ending March 2023, police recorded 43,774 offences, yet only 1,816 defendants were found guilty. 98% of them were men. My experience as a survivor informs this project, which comprises constructed scenes that provide evidence of the mundane domestic scenarios that form the crime scene, as well as the copious methods employed by abusers. It represents a collective experience of enduring Coercive Control, as over 12 months I have met and interviewed women who have survived this insidious form of abuse. The works reflect the ambiguities and psychological manipulation that enable this crime to flourish.
