Casa Dolce Casa
Casa Dolce Casa, in Italian meaning "Home Sweet Home", is a year long project that stems from my own experience as a queer person facing the reality of my native country, Italy. I moved to London almost a year ago, and I've had the chance to experience a new sense of freedom, free of the brutal discrimination and censorship that my country reserves to the LGBTQ+ community. I carefully chose the name "Casa Dolce Casa" and used it as a sort of oxymoron, as it alludes to the comfort of one’s own childhood nest, a place of warmth, love and belonging. In most cases, queer youth faces discrimination in the same place they call home, amongst family or their peers. With this project I wanted to focus on the impact that culture has on the queer experience as I collaborated with students, friends and strangers natives of different countries, coming from different social and ethnic backgrounds. How do family values, social customs and cultural settings impact personal development to the point of denying one’s true self?
