Amy Sarr
So long a life
So long a life presents a glimpse into coming of age through the depiction of a personal archive. Amy Sarr reenacts the Xoymet, a Saint-Louisian (Senegal) tradition in which brides borrowed photographs from their loved ones to exhibit in their groom’s room. Amy revisits it by creating imagery related to her subject’s personal experience, highlighting elements of Senegalese culture that can influence a woman’s life, from the mundane to cultural memory. This stemmed from Amy’s endeavor to question the emphasis placed on marriage as the pivotal step in a woman’s identity and becoming such in Senegal. She therefore brings you into the intimacy of a woman’s life through some of the experiences that have formed the person facing you today.
