The Civic Gospel
The Civic Gospel is a slideshow born out of the complex relationship I have with my hometown. The title links to the non-conformist preachings of George Dawson from 1890 when Birmingham was reportedly ‘The Best Governed City In The World’ (Harper’s Magazine). Today Birmingham is in crisis. There has been a deliberate rejection of our civic spaces and communities through lack of investment and determined polarisation. I see real beauty and value in these spaces. This is where real human interaction occurs, and relationships are formed. I record urban spaces as a way of exploring and celebrating the real culture of the city and to build an archive of our shared histories and legacies before it is lost for good.
