In 2023 I embarked on a journey, and my aim was to find out who I (British) am, culturally, through finding out who my (Caribbean) grandfather is. Like many of his generation, he left his home in the 1950’s to answer the call of Britain. After working for 30 years and raising a family, he returned back to Nevis, alone. At his door, anxious, I was unsure what to expect of the man I’d heard so much about. He is old. 95 years old to be exact; one of the oldest of the 12’000 people on his island. This work is a result of our slow conversations over long, hot days; an exploration into his past, seen through my eyes.
