Empire of Images
“To be a woman is to be an actress. Being feminine is a kind of theater, with its appropriate costumes, décor, lighting, and stylized gestures” (Sontag, 1972, p.22). ‘Empire of Images” is a body of work which addresses one’s identity as an aging woman, set against the backdrop of ageism and sexagism within popular Western culture. In this culture saturated with images pertaining to youth, I must defer my own aging process to remain visible. In doing so, I use the camera in combination with social media filters to identity with images of my younger self, but it’s feeling is fleeting, just like the platform they are made for. With one quick swipe my identity is replaced with another’s.
