The Collectors
The Collectors is a documentary project photographed on the Durham Coastline which was once heavily polluted by coal mining and the heavy industry wrought by the Industrial Revolution. Today, it’s protected and part of the Durham Heritage Coast project. It’s also where a group of people (in all weathers) stoop and scour the coastline for old sea glass. Sea Glass is what remains of the long-gone local glass making factories of the Victorian and Edwardian eras which were plentiful in the Northeast of England. Fuelled by local coal, the unwanted glass was habitually dumped into the sea. Over a hundred years later, every tide brings the glass back to shore.
