Farming today faces significant challenges. Climate change, rising costs, and shifting legislation have created a period of great uncertainty. Rooted documents a year on our family farm as we navigate this changing landscape and consider how we build a more sustainable future, restoring biodiversity alongside food production. Inspired by Jacqueline Sarsby’s 1990’s documentation of ‘Sweetstone Farm’, where the Rowden family demonstrated a unique resistance to modern farming methods. Their traditional, low-impact approach supported a healthier, more diverse ecosystem. As Sarsby wrote, “at one time, no-one had thought of poisoning vital parts of the whole system.” The cyclical nature of farming shaped my childhood and now shapes my children’s. But what will the future of farming look like for them?
