Open Water
Open Water follows the work of a community water lab, the experience of the volunteers – citizen scientists – who operate it, and the results of their E.coli tests on water taken from the local river. The images contrast recreational river locations with water quality testing results at the same location, introducing a sense of disquiet into the otherwise serene experience of picturesque riverside locations. They maintain a rational distance, that belies a more visceral response to entering water polluted with faeces. Using the completed test packs as a visual cue for water contamination, the photographs highlight how, even in dry weather, river water quality fails the established standards for recreational use.
