White Apple Red Village
White Apple Red Village is a lyrical documentary exploring the Red Village and nearby Quba in Azerbaijan – home to what is considered the world’s last surviving shtetl (Jewish village). The photographs trace the quiet rhythms and intimate relationships between the Jewish community and their Muslim neighbours, capturing a rare dynamic of peaceful coexistence. Situated between Eastern Europe and the Middle East, the Red Village sits at a cultural and historical crossroads – shaped by Soviet secularism, emerging capitalism, and enduring religious tradition. This project reflects on the continuity of Jewish folk life once thought lost to pogroms, assimilation, and the Holocaust – and on the fragile persistence of interfaith harmony in a region more often defined by displacement, conflict, and the erasure of minority histories.
