Overcoming the Inertia
The expanding and necessary demand for housing inevitably encroaches on the natural landscape, without much thought towards our relationship to nature. Suburbia becomes a construct of the mind and space. Overcoming the Inertia documents a series of walks from the edge of suburbia into the natural landscape prior to its impending development. Structures that confine both movement and thought dissolve momentarily and it’s easier to breathe. The scars of a developer’s Phase II Investigation interrupt the eye-line and the meditation. Ali Burden-Blake moves from photographing the psychological quality of suburbia, to documenting the commodification of a field and the loss of its history.
