Simon Roth
Patina
Noun: a gloss or sheen on a surface resulting from age or polishing. Making sense of the world we live in, its people, and their histories is, to a varying degree, everyone’s concern. However, the stories we are told and the myths we create often overlook the painful realities of the many people, both in the past and to this day, and the cruel ways in which we came to enjoy the comforts of 21st-century life, through empire, slavery and more recently, debt. I used the interior of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton, to embody some of these ideas, through its opulence, highlighting the overlooked, the scratched glass and the fading treasures.
