Possession
The European oil painting was the inspiration for this work. A form of art that garners reverence within the (European) cultural vernacular, but in themselves are objects that mythologize the past, and glorify the human desire to possess. The same is true for the female nude. It is a symbolic possession of her image. The female nude, therefore, was brought into the interior of the modern-day church — firstly, for its connection with the European oil painting, and thereon its historical role in the acquiring of wealth, power. Add to this its part in the controlling and demonising of women, particularly in terms of female sexuality. A legacy that persists to this day. Due to the indexical nature of the photograph, the image renders a different experience than that of an oil painting. This work offers reflection upon related differences of identity and representation.
