Lucy Wilkins
The Shape of Absence
Making sense of a shifting family dynamic brought about by her parents’ divorce, photographer Lucy Wilkins ‘The Shape of Absence’, creates a space for contemplation where photographs rather than words offer an emotional release from the loss. Through a repeated walk in a forest, the work explores themes of love, loss and loneliness. The ritual of returning to the same location introduces meditative quality, where repetition slows down time and allows for deep reflection. The stillness of the environment aims to facilitate mindfulness and creates a space where internal stillness makes way for gradual release. The project explores how people cope with emotional loss. It highlights how individuals process emotions differently, some reluctant to share while others externalise them.
