Suot
Suot is a Tagalog word that means “to wear” or “something worn.” My portrait series explores cultural identity through dress, focusing on people from different cultural and national backgrounds. my project began as a planned series of portraits, clothing details and contextual images, but developed into a wider body of work with ten themes and eleven participants. During the project, some shoots changed because of weather, location, or the clothing participants brought with them. These changes helped the work feel more natural and honest. Rather than simply documenting cultural clothing, Suot looks at how dress connects to memory, place, personal experience and the way people choose to represent themselves.
