The Land My Father Left Behind
My father rarely speaks about his past. This project explores what it means to grow up between cultures and to visit my roots in Chile for the first time. Through historic memory, geography and postcolonialism, I focused on the country’s identity and the resilience of Mapuche communities. While there, I witnessed political tensions that reopened memories of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. I was deeply moved by the desert landscapes, but even more by the people I met. Photographing became a way of holding onto conversations, emotions and belonging. These images are rooted in empathy, respect, and my search for connection with a land my father once left behind.
