Modern Venus: A Suburban Nightmare
This series demonstrates femininity is shaped and regulated by art-historical references and contemporary visual culture, revealing it as a constructed identity rather than inherent. Referencing Vermeer, Manet, van Eyck, Tretchikoff, and Grant Wood, the work reimagines canonical compositions in modern domestic settings. Conventional depictions of women are subverted through incisive wit, subtle irony, and staged incongruities that oscillate between homage and critique. Canonical visual languages are transformed through contemporary objects, artificial illumination, and digital manipulation, undermining the authority of the original works. By blending historical references with contemporary domestic elements, the series constructs an anachronistic, psychologically tense environment in which familiar cultural representations unravel.
