Beyond The Line-Up : Female DJ Representation In Edinburgh's Underground Music Scene
My work explores the representation and visibility of female DJs within Edinburgh’s club culture, focusing on the energy, atmosphere and community surrounding nightlife spaces. Working across both film and digital photography, I document live events in a way that feels immediate, intimate and honest, capturing moments of connection both on and off the dancefloor. Through conversations and surveys with female DJs, alongside research into archive material, exhibitions and contemporary artists, the project reflects on how women are seen and remembered within electronic music culture. The work aims to celebrate the individuality, confidence and presence of female DJs while creating a visual record of a scene that is constantly changing, shaped by collaboration, performance and shared experience.
