Isabelle Johnson
This project is an in-depth analysis into brutalist architecture and its emergence. It visually communicates the geometric form and spatial complexity. It traces brutalism back to its raw material origins through an examination of cement and concrete; being the fundamental components. This project focuses on the lifecycle of brutalism and how it progresses from its foundation to production, to construction and lastly becoming a social residue. It researches the environmental implications of concrete production and how this extraction strips away natural landscapes, questioning function versus form. It is a visual exploration into the tension between chaos and structure, emphasising the contrast between the raw disorder of organic materials with the rigid structure of brutalist architecture. This contrast, and non-linear process is conveyed through this imagery rather than directly defined.
