Gobsmacked
My ongoing series, ‘Gobsmacked’, examines a person’s experience with stuttering/stammering. It explores how people want their stutters to be shown/ what their stutter feels like, through portraits, medical letters and surreal photographs made from the participant’s statements. As someone who stutters, I think there is something quietly significant about spending months building images around not my own, but other people’s stutter. I had never gone that deep into someone's life before. The preparation before phone calls. The word substitutions. The exhaustion of a day where speaking has been difficult. For those who have never stuttered, this work offers an entry point into multiple experiences that are heavily misunderstood. For those who have, it offers the feeling of being seen.
