Tending to Gold
Documenting the work of the Twickenham Beekeepers Association, ‘Tending to Gold’ explores the systems of ecological interdependence involved in beekeeping. The relationship between human labour, bees, and the natural world reveals the possibility of a more symbiotic relationship with nature. My childhood in Estonia was governed by nature, and as an adult in London, I've felt its absence. Thus, while this project highlights the importance of apiculture, and celebrates those keeping the ancient practice alive, it has also rekindled the connection I had to nature in my youth. Using a medium format camera and analogue development processes, I mirror the physical rituals of both bee and keeper that sustain the hives; the labour of love innate within slow creation.
