In the twilight and when the sky is clouded
The series ‘in the twilight and when the sky is clouded’ is a material exploration of my great-grandfather’s archive of five hundred glass negatives, documenting family life in the 1930s-1950s in England. Through sustainable analogue photographic techniques, I explore the links between the technology and engineering of the mid-twentieth century, and the fleeting nature of childhood. My process of working with manual and time-intensive processes, such as rosemary toned cyanotype prints, allows me to respond to the pro-capitalist context entangled with photography’s invention. Creating a dialogue around materiality and ephemerality, I speak through fragments of the archive to the relatives I never got to meet, and the ones I wish I had longer with.
