Growing up within the Protestant faith has left me with a complicated relationship to its structures and traditions. This work returns to the spaces and symbols that shaped my understanding of belief from an early age, using photography to examine the lasting influence these environments continue to hold over my identity. Central to the work is the role of idolisation within the church and the elevation of figure presented as moral and spiritual ideals. These representations often felt distant from my own experience of faith, creating a tension between participation and detachment. Ideas of submission and performance move throughout the images, reflecting on the expectations embedded within religious life and the lasting presence religion can hold even as belief shifts.
