Blank Expresion
"In any major city minding your own business is a science -Se7en" (1995). 'Blank Expression' explores individuals moving through urban spaces on autopilot, absorbed in devices and thoughts, enclosed within themselves. Their expressions appear vacant, suggesting inward focus and detachment. The work reflects sonder, awareness that every passerby has a complex inner life. The series also records traces of human presence left in the street, where the city continually evolves through everyday movement. By revisiting locations repeatedly, I document these traces as echoes of past actions. Having moved from a rural town after 18 years, Manchester initially felt overwhelming and fragmented, with blurred faces, noise and abstraction. This work is my way to slow down and understand an alien environment.
