Threading Through: How Trauma Weaves the Female Experience
Threading Through is a monochromatic autobiographical project that visualises the lived realities of the female experience, focusing on the effects of domestic violence through diverse bodyscape photography. Unfortunately, it confronts an uncomfortable subject matter, however it avoids defining individuals solely through trauma. Instead, it highlights endurance and the possibility of reclamation through a visual diary. Threading Through invites viewers into a space of reflection, encouraging an intimate discussion about experiences that are often marginalised and silenced. The desideration for escapism is pursued through a visual language that integrates yarn physically and metaphorically, asking viewers not to just observe but to feel. These textures act as extensions of the body, echoing the ways trauma can be both internalised and externalised. Yarn has become a symbol of sensuality and vulnerability, as well as showing the juxtaposition of control and healing. Threading Through aims to navigate these sensitive themes through empathy and collective understanding, and a way to offer a quiet but powerful sense of hope.
