Retouched to superhuman perfection
I dream of a mirror. I see myself with a mask, or I see in the mirror somebody who is me but whom I do not recognize as myself - Jorge Luis Borges, 1895. Drawing upon self-portraiture and the more recent cultural phenomenon of the 'selfie' Retouched to superhuman perfection explores the ongoing relationship we have with the representation of the female face on social media. This work experiments with tools of manipulation and distortion to examine how a generation has grown to depend on filters to reshape themselves into society's 'ideal' model. Using scale and repetition, the viewer is invited to reassess society's expectations imposed on young women and how it might have impacted themselves.
