Bowshaw Views, Sheffield
There are around 330,000 allotment plots across the UK. Amid the cost-of-living crisis, changing social infrastructures, and concerns over future food security, these growing spaces are becoming increasingly important. Bowshaw Views, Sheffield, explores how interactions with the land are expressed through labour, cultivation, and care. Using aerial perspectives, the project reveals human relationships with the environment as material traces, emphasising pattern, texture, and form. This vertical viewpoint draws on ideas of surveillance, knowledge, and power to expose spatial relationships unseen from ground level. In doing so, the allotment is presented not only as a site of individual activity, but as a shared landscape where separate plots collectively form a resilient community.
