‘Assembling Memories’

“Assembling Memories” explores memory, photography, and inheritance, questioning how family history is constructed through images rather than lived experience. It asks: Is memory something we remember, or something we assemble? Archival photographs are used to examine how visual records shape understandings of a past known only through representation. Through digital manipulation—pixelation, repetition, blurring, and layering—the images are disrupted and reconstructed, removing clarity and challenging photography’s role as stable evidence. The act of assembling becomes central, reflecting how memory is continuously built, altered, and reinterpreted. By reworking archival material, I position myself as both inheritor and author of a history I did not directly experience. The work reflects the shift to digital image culture, where photographs are endlessly altered, presenting memory as unstable and mediated.
