Dylan Flanagan
Men.
“Men.” is a personal project that documents my struggle to define my own interpretation of masculinity and what it means to be a man. Growing up in a working-class family, I was raised with working-class norms and values about what is expected of me as a man, such as blue-collar work, stoicism, and mental resilience. However, as I grew older and made friends, I began to see how their versions of masculinity were the complete opposite – more open-minded, creative, expressive, and self-determining. This project examines how the men I surround myself with differ in their views of masculinity and what a man is, by combining portraits of them with still images of their surroundings and day-today life.
