This body of work explores the relationship between place and identity as a young woman growing up in Belfast. The Irish identity in the north of Ireland is complex. Our culture has been manipulated, moulded and exploited by outside interests and powers, leading to a sense of dislocation and a difficult relationship with our own identity. The project examines the fractured experience of home, in a place of social deprivation and harsh realities on the one hand, and on the other its site at the foot of Divis and Black Mountain, so high it gets snowed in in winter, gives it beautiful views of the Mourne Mountains. Belonging there brings up contradictory emotions.
