Salt and Stone

“Salt and Stone” explores the hidden history of smuggling within Hastings, focusing on the subtle architectural and spatial traces embedded within the town’s landscape. Rather than documenting overt historical landmarks, the work examines overlooked details such as passageways, doorways, and coastal edges, where histories of concealment and movement once unfolded. Through a restrained, black and white visual approach, the images adopt a quiet and observational tone, emphasising absence and suggestion over direct representation. By combining visual ambiguity with fragments of historical context, the project considers how these past activities continue to shape the identity of Hastings in ways that remain largely unseen, embedded within the town's everyday spaces and contemporary environment, and subtly influencing its present day character and perception.
