"For each shape that our eyes encounter, the brain attempts to find a match in a 'dictionary' of previously encountered shapes the we build up over the course of our lives, if the shape is to grossly different it [runs the risk] of being ignored entirely, however if the discrepancy between the unfamiliar shape and some pre-existing one is only partial... the strange shape can cause us to pay closer attention" (P. Messaris). Highly influenced by contemporary advertising, my work addresses this theory. By introducing unfamiliar objects within an environment in a surreal or humorous manner my work aims to create an attention grabbing device that grants an abundance of possible narratives.
