Mark Gaterell

Coventry's inner ring road

This work reflects my search for the beauty I believe is hidden within the remnants of the UK's post-war enthusiasm for Modernism. Coventry's inner ring road, which was a central element of its post-war redevelopment, was conceived in the shadow of some of the most influential pre-war proponents of the Modern Movement. Of particular interest to me has been the possibility of capturing the inherent beauty of its visual legacy, offered through the vistas of its structural elements and the accompanying infrastructure. It is this enduring Modern artefact, one that exhibits the key tenets of the design theories that shaped the resulting urban environment, which is represented in the images in this portfolio.
