Paul Walsh
Along the Towpath
Paul Walsh's practice is primarily concerned with exploring the relationship between photography and walking. He walks as a way of experiencing a place, and uses photography to study its topography and tell its story. He is ultimately inspired by how walking can open up the world to the individual and how, through the combined effects of closer observation and the motion of walking, we may come to know a place in a more profound way. In the series Along the towpath, Paul Walsh maps his walking journey along the Basingstoke canal and Wey navigation. His empirical journey draws attention to the history and memory inherent in the landscape, whilst reflecting on the canal's melancholy and untameable beauty.
