The Barristers of 1 Pump Court
I worked as an 'outdoor' clerk in Woolwich County Court for barristers representing the cases of 'publicly funded' clients. These cases were the stuff of everyday life pitted against stronger forces. The Pump Court barristers are cogs in the machinery of the legal system who attempt to untangle the problems experienced by the marginalised. These barristers work with publicly funded clients who were not always appreciative of the work done on their behalf, but whose lives could be changed be a good outcome. Legal aid has lost 40% of its funding. Barrister and client are now suffering its adverse repercussions. The chancellor Ken Clarke states that access to justice is a mark of civilised society, however the current government is eroding that right.
