Caoimhe Walsh
The photographic image lends itself to issues of anxiety as it presents the viewer with a representational image yet separates the viewer from that which it represents. Through the use of soft focus, camera shake and double exposures the work presents a distorted depiction of an interior, basement space, a space that symbolizes the subconscious and subjective experience. The use of these photographic tools serves to further disconnect the viewer from what is photographed. This disconnection amplifies the experience of anxiety as the work demands of the viewer that he/she depends on an internalized, subjective rationalization of the images to interpret the visual information available. This lack of concrete information and objectivity leads to the experience of anxiety.
