Projected Identity
Outdated attitudes towards people of colour have no place in a modern Scotland. Western ideals are often used to judge people, and in this case, Scottish people of colour. Scotand is a country with very strong iconology, and so often when people don't fit the societal norm, they are considered to be, and treated as otherly if they don't fit with visual stereotypes. To demonstrate this, I created these images and an accompanying short film lit by anonymously sourced 35mm kodachrome slides which were shot in Scotland at various times during the 1960s-1970s to show an identity often fragmented by negative interactions and assumptions. These have been created as part of my ongoing EXOTTISH image series.
