This work looks at the fairy trees of Irish folklore. The hawthorn tree is believed to be the fairies' sacred fortress where they live but folklore fairies are not the friendly type in children's books. They have a reputation for being ill-mannered, suspicious and spiteful. People in Ireland are afraid to dig up these trees, regardless of how inconvenient their location is, whether it is on the side of a mountain or in the middle of a field. They fear the wrath of the fairies who, threaten to bring illness or even death to the family of the one who has harmed the sacred tree. Many fairy trees remain as reminders of the blending of lore and landscape.
