The Uncanny Valley
This series of images is a documentation of the suburban landscape. By abstracting elements of the everyday, a new perspective on the quotidian is created. The way in which the images are shot create a sort of estrangement within familiar surroundings. Everyday scenes are photographed from an unusual perspective, presenting the viewer with images that seem almost artificial in appearance, leading them to question what may be real or what may be constructed. The way in which the scenes are framed and composed subtract them from the world we may be familiar with and suggest somewhere else, an otherness, an uncanniness, something that is both familiar and unfamiliar. The work blurs the boundaries between the real and the imaginary and as a result the images linger in a space of the inbetween, somewhere in the uncanny valley. The nature of the photographic medium further strengthens discussion about the gap between reality and representation.
