Ben McDonnell
I introduce the idea of 'The Listening Camera' through the following three works. Both 'Inversions 1981 - present' and 'Landscapes' are based on the first piece of music I heard. This has been opened as raw data, printed, re-worked and re-photographed. 'Sound, Space, Structure' is a sonogram of the studio it is installed in, printed onto thirty meters of paper and hung in the ceiling. Provoking us to consider what it could mean to think of the camera as a device that listens as well as sees, the listening camera encourages participation with photographs as sonic experiences in addition to their inherent visual form.
