Jason Dimmock
Poole Young Carers
This work features young carers at an after-school club in Dorset; a place where they are free from their responsibilities and able to play as children. Standing before the camera during breaks in play, their presentation provides information towards their identities through posture, clothing and personal stylistic choices. Research suggests that young carers are commonly affected by low self-esteem, social isolation, bullying, poor education, and physical and emotional problems associated with their role. They are also known to be resilient and more mature because of their caring duties, and we question whether the need to grow up too soon might be evidenced in their presentations here.
