‘Uses of the Erotic’
This body of work subtly challenges classical depictions of the nude in attempt to reclaim a sense of the erotic through a female photographer’s eyes. I visually responded to Audre Lorde’s essay Uses of the Erotic, in which she protests that the erotic has often been ‘misnamed by men and used against women - made into the confused, the trivial, the psychotic, the plasticised sensation’. The large format camera adheres to the classical capturing of the nude, however I do not discard imperfections and rather apply the original contact sheet edits onto the final prints. Where traditionally an X signifies the discarding of a photograph, I applied the X from Elles x Paris Photo - a campaign against the underrepresentation of female photographers.
